Introduction to the Doctoral Program

The Department of Family and Child Ecology offers a Ph.D. degree program in Family and Child Ecology with three specializations:

• Child Development
• Family Studies
• Marriage and Family Therapy.

The MFT specialization is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education of The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (COAMFTE). For specific requirements, please see Family and Child Ecology website at: http://www.fce.msu.edu.The Ph.D. in Family and Child Ecology emphasizes human development and family dynamics across the life course. Families and individuals are studied in the context of multiple systems, including schools, communities, and health care systems. Emphasis is placed on resilience and positive development, and diversity is a core value of the program.

Students in the child development and family studies specializations have the opportunity to plan flexible programs that meet their professional needs. Students in the MFT specialization complete a curriculum established by COAMFTE. The required core of courses for all students includes:

  • FCE 801 Family Ecosystems
  • PhD Pro-seminar--strongly recommended in first semester
  • Research methods and statistics: minimum of 12 credits
    beyond master’s requirements.
  • 24 dissertation credits (FCE 999).

Beyond the requirements above, the student plans, with the guidance committee, a comprehensive program of family and human development courses, additional research, and other course work pursuant to a specialization in Child Development, Family Studies, or Marriage and Family Therapy. Students are expected to gain competence in research methodology, family and/or human development theory, and a cognate area, and will complete comprehensive examinations prior to proposing a dissertation topic.

Doctoral Research

  • Relationships between parental rejection, family
    functioning and disordered eating.
  • Family decision-making: Experiences of adult
sons and daughters with elder care decisions.

ment of African American college students
