Interdepartmental Graduate Specialization in Infancy & Early
Childhood
What
is the IGSIEC Program?
The IGSIEC specialization is
an interdisciplinary program, offered jointly by 12 academic units
on campus, focused on the early education and development of very
young children, from birth to 5 years. Specifically,
the program is designed to:
- Provide an opportunity for graduate students to obtain a comprehensive
and contemporary academic experience in the field of human infancy
and early childhood;
- Help graduate students with an interest in human infancy and early
childhood to become sensitive to their professional obligations and
responsibilities;
- Develop an intellectual environment that will foster the growth
of research and teaching in the area of human infancy and early childhood,
as well as sensitize students to clinical, research, and social policy
issues related to early human development;
- Increase public awareness of the critical importance of the early
years of human development.
IGSIEC Program Requirements
Students are expected to master competencies in the following areas: Theoretical
Foundations, Practice Foundations, Foundations of Policy and Advocacy, and Foundations
of Research and Evaluation. Competencies may be master through a variety
of experiences which include completing coursework and professional/ scholarly
readings, attending and presenting at conferences, participating in seminars
and discussions, carry out independent study experiences, preparing grant proposals
and manuscripts, and completing internships, practicum and/or field studies.
There are three required experiences for IGSIEC students: 1) Students
must complete 12 credits of approved coursework as a part
of their programs, including 4-6 credits of the core IGSIEC
seminar experience; 2) Students must complete a semester-long
internship, and 3) Students must demonstrate mastery or required
competencies.

Admission
Requirements
To be
accepted into the specialization, students must have been admitted
to one of the degree programs in participating academic units. Interested
students should obtain an IGSIEC application from core IGSIEC faculty
in their home departments or from an IGSIEC Coordinating Committee member
(Dr. Holly Brophy-Herb, FCE hbrophy@msu.edu;

or Dr. Ellen Whipple, SW whipple@msu.edu).
Completed applications should be submitted to Dr. Ellen Whipple, Michigan
State University, School of Social Work, 244 Baker Hall, East Lansing,
MI 48824-1118. Following
review of the application by the Coordinating Committee, students will
receive written notification of the admission decision.
