Dr. Claire Vallotton has been awarded a Clinical Research Fellowship from the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Vallotton presented her research on the Effects of an infant sign intervention on the communicative behaviors of children in monolingual and bilingual families at MultiMod 2009: Multimodality of communication in children: gestures, emotions, language, and cognition. Dr. Holly Brophy-Herb has been named Associate Editor for the Infant Mental Health Journal. IMHJ is the official journal of the World Associate for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH) and a leading journal in the study of infant development. Dr. Brophy-Herb is active in WAIMH and serves on the state board for the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (Mi-AIMH).
Kalli Decker, 2nd year MS student in Child Development, was honored with one of eight competitive Innovation Awards from Children’s Central and the Children’s Trust Fund of Michigan for her white paper on titled “Parents’ Communication Choices for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and their Vulnerability to Maltreatment: Information Sources and the Influence of the Media.” Ms. Decker will present her paper at the Consumer Culture & the Ethical Treatment of Children Conference in East Lansing this November.
The MSU Child Development Laboratories will soon offer infant caregiving for infants 6 weeks to 18 months. In Fall 2009, the CDLs opened a new full-day toddler classroom. The new infant and toddler program additions provide excellent opportunities for studying infant and toddler development in the context of high quality early childhood programming.
